Unit 85 Have and have got
Lesson length 45 minutes
Preparation Photocopy the worksheet for Exercise A. You will need half as many worksheets as
there are students in your class. Cut them in half so that Student 1 and Student 2
sections are separate.
Photocopy the activity sheet and cut the copies into three sets. You will need
enough copies for one third of the class to have copies of Set A questions, one
third copies of Set B questions, and one third copies of Set C questions.
You may also wish to copy the sentences used in Exercise C on to an OHT.
If you have any toy money (such as the notes from a Monopoly set) you could
use it in the sentence auction in Exercise C.
Demonstration Walk around the classroom using sentences that demonstrate the different uses
of have and have got. Use your surroundings and the students for inspiration
where possible, e.g.:
I haven’t got a BMW, I’ve got a Honda.
Have you got a red pen?
Jane doesn’t have a computer.
Do you have a dictionary?
David and Victoria Beckham have got a house in the USA.
We have two children.
She doesn’t have any brothers or sisters..
Have your parents got any nieces or nephews?
Johnny Depp’s got brown eyes and brown hair.
Margaret doesn’t have long hair.
Has your partner got blue eyes?
I have a cold.
I haven’t got flu.
Have you got a headache?
I don’t often have toast for breakfast.
Do you have a shower or a bath in the morning?
We have a holiday in Denmark every year.
I always have a wash before I go out.
Explanation Write the full, short, positive and negative forms of have and have got in
the Present Simple on the board.
NOTE: Full and short forms are set out on page 186 of the book.
When the students are familiar with the forms, write the following practice sentences
on the board and ask students what form of have should be used in the gap.

• I ________ (not) car.
• She ________ (not) a car.

Repeat to practise the forms of have got
Explain that we can use have and have got:
• to talk about possessions (repeat sentences from the demonstration,
e.g. I haven’t got a BMW. I’ve got a Honda. Have you got a pen?
Jane doesn’t have a computer.)
• to talk about our families (e.g. We have two children. She hasn’t got any
brothers or sisters. Have your parents got any nieces or nephews?)
• to describe people (e.g. Johnny Depp’s got brown eyes. Margaret doesn’t
have long hair. Has your partner got blue eyes?)
• to say we are not feeling well (e.g. I have a cold. I haven’t got flu.
Have you got a headache?)
Explain that we use have, NOT have got:
• to talk about meals (e.g. I don’t often have toast for breakfast.)
• to talk about holidays (e.g. We have a holiday in Denmark every year.)
• with a bath, a shower, or a wash (e.g. Do you have a shower or a bath
in the morning? I always have a wash before I go out.)
When the students are familiar with the uses, write the following practice sentences
on the board and ask students to complete them. Remind students that in some
cases both have and have got are possible, but in other cases only have is possible.
• We always ________ eggs for breakfast.
• ________ you ________ any money?
• She ________ (not) brown eyes.
• ________ a good holiday!
• I ________ stomach ache.
• I ________ usually ________ (not) a bath in the evening.
Practice Exercise A (pairs)
Give half the students in the class a Student 1 section of the worksheet and the other
half a Student 2 section.
Each student should attempt to complete the sentences on their sheet. Then they
should get their partner to test them and tell them whether they are right.
At the end of the exercise, go through the sheet with the whole class, to make sure
that all the students have a correct set of answers.
Exercise B (groups and whole class)
Ask your students to do Exercise B in the book; then extend the practice with this
exercise.
Divide the class into three equal groups, A, B, and C. Give all of the As a copy of
the Set A questions from the activity sheet [one set of questions per student]. Give
Bs Set B questions, and Cs Set C questions.
Give the groups time to work out and write out their questions. Monitor and help
where necessary.

Now ask the groups to stand up and mingle with the other groups. They have to
put their questions to different members of the class and find one person for each
of the things on their list. Tell them to write down the names of the students who
have the things on their lists (and details, where necessary).
At the end ask students to go back to their groups and compare their results.
Nominate one person from each group to tell the rest of the class about their
results. Check that they use have and have got correctly.
Exercise C (whole class)
This is an auction game, in which students ‘bid for’ and ‘buy’ sentences.
Write out the following sentences on the board (or use an OHT)
She is tired, but she doesn’t have a cold.
I haven’t got lunch every day.
Have you got a shower every day?
Have you got an English dictionary?
Do you have a headache?
I have got a holiday in Spain every year.
We’ve got a large garden.
I’ve got a bath at ten and I go to bed at eleven.
They’re having got dinner at the moment.
They’ve got two dogs.
Have got a good weekend.
Have you got a motorbike?
Put the students into small teams and give each team a money limit, e.g. £2000.
(If you are using toy money give each team an equal amount to spend.) Tell
students that you are going to ‘sell’ the sentences. The idea of the game is that
teams bid against each other and try to buy as many correct sentences as possible
with their money. They cannot exceed their limit.
Give the teams time to look at the sentences on the board and decide which
sentences they are going to bid for.
Start the sale. Try to get the best prices for the sentences. Offer the first sentence
for a low price. When a team bids, try to get the other teams to bid higher until
one team wins the sentence. The price they pay is then deducted from their
money total. At this stage don’t confirm whether the sentence is correct.
When you have sold all of the sentences, go through the list and tell the class
which sentences are correct/incorrect. Elicit the correct answers.
The winning team is the one that has managed to buy the most correct sentences.
Extra (whole class)
If there is any time left at the end of the class, get students to correct the incorrect
sentences from Exercise C and write them out.
